Scholarship Speech Contest for High School Juniors and Seniors

The Los Angeles Chinese American Citizens Alliance Community Action is hosting its first Scholarship Speech Contest for high school juniors and seniors. The Alliance is a national organization established 1895 with the Los Angeles Lodge founded in 1912 and has been actively seeking justice and civil rights for Chinese Americans. Community Action is a 501c3 entity of the Los Angeles Lodge created to help promote and foster educational programs and youth leadership.

Public speaking is a vital part of leadership and Community Action desires to provide a platform for students to practice their communications skills as well as help them along their path to higher education and future careers.

Contest participants are to present a 5 to 7 minute speech on the following theme.

Theme: “A seat at the table”

CONTEST DATE: Saturday, May 10, 2014; 9:00AM to 12:00PM

DEADLINE TO REGISTER: TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2014; 11:00PM

Location: Chinese American Citizens Alliance Los Angeles Lodge – 415 Bamboo Lane, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (Los Angeles Chinatown)

Scholarship Awards

  • First Place - $350
  • Second Place - $250
  • Third Place - $150
  • Two Honorable mentions - $75 each

CONTEST RULES

  1. Participants must be enrolled in a high school as a junior or senior.
  2. There is NO fee to participate.
  3. Speeches must be between 5 to 7 minutes long.
  4. Time begins as soon as the speaker begins and ends at the last word of the speech.
  5. Speakers going over or under time will be penalized on their ballots. A 15 seconds grace period will be given.
  6. Time signals will be given by a time keeper.  
  7. Each speech must be an original composition by the Participant.
  8. Each speech must be on the stated theme. “A seat at the table.”
  9. NO props of any kind are allowed but speakers may use notes on 3”x5” index cards.
  10. Participants should dress in business attire.
  11. Participants must be respectful of the other competitors in the room while spectating.
  12. A Chief Judge will be appointed to lead the panel of judges. The Chief Judge will be in charge of discussion among the panel of judges when counting ballots and will certify the results of the contest.
  13. Judging will be based on interpretation of topic (originality), content, and overall performance.
  14. Participants must register before the deadline date (TUESDAY, MAY 6; 11:00PM). The number of Participants may be limited at the discretion of the Alliance; registration applications will be accepted on a first come first served basis.
  15. Community Action will be the official rule keeper and will remedy any issues that may arise.
