Los Angeles Lodge and Greater San Gabriel Valley Lodge will jointly award scholarships to college bound high school seniors, in the Greater Los Angeles area (using one application form for all listed scholarships).
In 2008, the following 25 scholarships were awarded:
- George W. Tom Memorial Scholarships (Two endowed $500 scholarships)
- Robert and Edith Jung Scholarships (One endowed $500 scholarships)
- Kow Kong Benevolent Family Association Scholarships (One $500 scholarship)
- Jessie W. Lai Memorial Scholarship (Two $500 scholarships donated by Irvin Lai)
- Joseph Ileto Memorial Scholarship (One $500 scholarship donated by anonymous donor)
- Nelson Moy Sr. Memorial Scholarships (One $500 scholarships donated by Jason Fujimoto)
- John & Sharon Wong Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
- 751 Yale Legacy Fund Scholarships (Three $500 scholarships donated by CACA Foundation, Betty Yeow, and Collin & Sue Hum Lai)
- Fong Liu Scholarships (Three $500 scholarships)
- Central City Optimist Scholarships (Four $500 scholarships, one donated by Annie Mark in memory of her father Tat-Leung Fong)
- Victor Wong Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
- Lun Wu Memorial Scholarship (One $500 scholarship donated by the Wu Family)
- Munson & Suellen Kwok Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
- Shirley Hwong Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
- Philip & Sandy Young Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
- Sabrina Chang Scholarship (One $500 scholarship)
Qualifications
- Must be a graduating high school senior by June of the year under consideration and will be attending college.
- Must have maintained a minimum of a "B" grade point average (3.0 out of 4.0) in high school.
- Must have demonstrated services to both school and community.
- Must have financial need as determined by the judges.
- Must submit all required materials, documents, and essay(s)
- Must be a permanent resident or citizen of the United States.
- Those applying for the Ileto scholarship must submit an additional essay on Joseph Ileto.
- Application must be accompanied by one letter of recommendation from the applicant’s teacher or counselor who have known the applicant for a minimum of one semester.
Method of Selection
- Scholarship applications must be complete with all requested documents mailed under one cover and POSTMARKED by the deadline of April 17 2009. Finalists will be notified of the time and date of their interviews.
- Interviews will be conducted by the end of the second full week in May. Three judges, appointed by the Alliance Los Angeles Lodge Education Committee Chair, will select the winners. Any applicant who misses the interview will be subject to disqualification, except for those with excused absence by the judges.
- The judges will consider academic achievements, extracurricular activities, recommendation, financial need, and essay(s).
- The winners will be notified within one week of the interviews and must be available to accept the scholarship check at the awards ceremony on a Saturday morning in June before graduation
